The KMF, with an annual budget of €200,000, provided grants of up to €20,000 for events, research, and innovative projects. These endeavors were geared towards generating high-quality knowledge and fostering learning in SRoL, subsequently informing programming and policy decisions. The portfolio encompassed a wide range of SRoL challenges, balancing thematic focuses like human security and transitional justice with process-oriented inquiries into the generation and utilization of knowledge. This strategic approach ensured that projects effectively contributed to the knowledge-brokering role of the Secretariat.

Each year, KPSRL structured KMF activities around thematic headlines such as Preventing Conflict and Sustaining Peace; Inequality, Power, and Governance; and the implementation of Goal 16 of the SDGs. Emphasis was also placed on Change and Learning processes; Examining and Improving Policy; People-centered approaches, as well as addressing power imbalances and promoting locally led development through equitable partnerships. Additionally, the Fund prioritized emerging topics like mental health support in conflict zones, digital peacebuilding, access to justice, and feminist foreign policy, underscoring its commitment to addressing contemporary challenges in conflict and instability contexts.
