Guiding Principles for Integration of MHPSS in Accountability Mechanisms

One year ago, a KPSRL-funded study was published on Integration of mental health and psychosocial support approaches in accountability mechanisms for atrocity crimes.

The report highlighted the importance of mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) as integral part of accountability efforts, with the aim to enhance the well-being of witnesses and victims as well as to improve the quality of the processes. In her study, the author, An Michels, researched best practices, held consultations and formulated actionable recommendations for tribunals and other accountability mechanisms.

A next phase of this project, led by the Netherlands ministry of Foreign Affairs, together with the International Criminal Court, continues to strive to further strengthening the impact of accountability mechanisms for atrocity crimes through increased quality of evidence and focus on healing of victims. In order to achieve this, the project will work towards the structural integration of MHPSS in the design and implementation of accountability mechanisms from the very start. To support this integration, the project intends to design guiding principles or standards, to be globally acknowledged and anchored internationally. The guiding principles will serve national and international accountability mechanisms and will assist practitioners, policy makers, experts, donors, governments and victims who seek justice.

The recommendations formulated in the study, will serve as a basis for the design of the guiding principles.

We are therefore seeking feedback to help us prioritise recommendations that need to be reflected in the guiding principles.

We would be most grateful if you could assist us by completing this survey. This should take no more than 5 minutes of your time.

Although not all questions are required, we hope you will spend a few minutes rank ordering the 15 principal recommendations. Your perspective is very important. If your schedule permits, we would also value your perspective on the importance of specific recommendations. At the end of the survey you can indicate your interest in being informed further about this project and related events.

Thank you for taking the time to complete this survey.

The survey closes on 31 May 2025.
